Rap music doesn’t have the best reputation. It’s because of rappers who only rap about negative and controversial things. Not all rappers are like this. The argument I usually give as to why hip hop is good is “it’s not country”. There are other reasons too, that’s why I’m writing this article.
It’s not all about sex, bitches, money, etc.
I know, there are a lot of rap songs about smoking weed and getting money, but don’t let those songs make you think that rap is only about crimes and such because it’s not. There are plenty of rap songs that are actually meaningful. Almost any song by Chance the Rapper, most of Kanye’s old stuff and some of his new stuff, and have you ever heard of Common? Rap is so much more than some thug rapping about weed.
Mainstream rap isn’t all bad
Before you get mad, keep in mind that Chance is mainstream. A lot of mainstream rap is the same, some over-hyped rapper yelling his repetitive lyrics over some trap beat with the autotune cranked up. Not all mainstream rap is like this, Chance the rapper, Kanye, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and there’s more. It’s not that all the mainstream rappers are bad, it’s that you are listening to the wrong mainstream rappers.
Bad person doesn’t mean bad music
Sometimes people refuse to listen to an artist because of how that person acts in the public eye. That’s a ridiculous way to live, and I promise that if you do that, you are missing out on some great music. Just because someone is an asshole in public, that doesn’t mean they make bad music. I know I keep using the same examples, but take Kanye. He is very much disliked by a lot of people by how he acts, but his music is so good. This doesn’t just happen with artists, it happens with the whole genre of rap. Instead of judging the book by its cover, listen before you decide to hate it.
It doesn’t have to be old to be good
People often like to talk about how much they love old school rap and how much better it is than todays rap. Those people are wrong. I’m not saying old school rap is bad, it is, but that’s not what I’m saying. First of all, almost all rap before like 1995 is horrible. It’s really cheesy and it’s the style of rap that old people use when they’re trying to be “hip”. Rappers like Nas, Jay-Z, and Tupac, are examples of good old school rap, but there are rappers just as good, if not better than those guys today. (I mean have you heard “DAMN” yet?) Just because old rap is what you grew up on, doesn’t mean it’s better that what’s being put out now. Wether you like rap or not, at least give it a chance before you judge a whole genre of music based off of one artist.
