SuperHot is a FPS video game released in 2016 by Team SuperHot. I myself have only been playing the game for about 2 hours and the only thing I can say about it is that it is SUPER HOT!
Without giving too much of the plot away, (or lack there of) I will explain how the game works and my overall feelings so far. I’m not finishing the game until I have played it with the rest of the Crew so expect a couple of videos of us playing to come soon.
First off, genius game mechanics! The premise of the game is to eliminate the “red guys” but to do so you will need to get your hands on a weapon. Wether that be a gun, bat, sword, or billiard ball, but this game takes it a step further by only letting time progress by moving in the environments. This makes for an awesome experience and creates a sense that every move you make counts. With the “red guys” also being equipped with weapons, Matrix style bullet-time shootouts are created and during these moments you must plan your movements to avoid the barrage of bullets.
Second, the immersion. With the main menu set up as an old DOS style computer, each level blends together with some witty chat room dialogue that further drives the story. Not to mention the relief of hearing the words “SUPER HOT” being chanted after clearing a level you’ve been trying your hand at for 30 minutes. There is a real sense of pride and satisfaction you get after watching your replay in normal speed. The fluid movements pull you in and it’s the first time in a while I’ve experienced that with a video game. And with a VR version of this game having been released, this makes me want to get a VR headset even more!
Third and finally, it’s an indie game! In this day and age, indie games are making a real name for themselves! With games like Shovel Knight, Cuphead, and many more, these studios spend more time on creativity rather than how they can make money, which ironically in return makes them more money! Not to mention that a lot of these indie studios also develop free DLC for the games they release which is a major plus!
My review for this game may have been very vague, but keep in mind I have not finished it. If I had to score this game on the very little I’ve played of it, I would have to give it a 10/10. The creativity is there with its excellent game design. The design is there with its minimalistic environments and use of colors. And most importantly, the developers are there! Without them, games like this would never be around!
