A Nuclear Review: The Cloverfield Paradox

Upon watching this years Super Bowl, I did, as many Americans also did, enjoy a couple of the advertisements. But one in particular caught my attention more than anything.

Having heard very little about the “Untitled Cloverfield Movie” that has been in production, seeing a surprise advertisement for its release was amazing, and what made it better was its release on Netflix to watch right after the game… which I did.

The 2008 Cloverfield is probably one of my favorite found footage movies, and when I first saw it I wanted to see so much more. Then came 10 Cloverfield Lane which was far from what I was expecting it still delivered the same amount of excitement and suspense for this universe. But after watching The Cloverfield Paradox, I’m not sure what is going on anymore.

The films plot states that Earth’s power supply is running low, so a project is launched in space to creat a particle accelerator to create infinite power and save Earth. The plot of this movie has literally gone out of this world and I’m not sure how to feel about it. It follows one of the crew members who is on the space station and her husband who is left on Earth where tensions are high between countries, but with the test of Shepard, the particle accelerator, the crew and its ship are teleported to another dimension. This is foreshadowed at the beginning of the film when the crew is watching a news segment titled “The Cloverfield Paradox”. In the segment, the person being interviewed explains that with the test being done, a rip in dimensions could occur, letting “monsters” and “demons” enter our world. This leads me to believe that this film is a prequel to the 2008 and shows how the monsters are present on Earth, but it is hard to tell. I can only hope we get more Cloverfield movies to better connect this universe.

The film on its own without having seen the other two stands great on its own. The ideas portrayed and mind bending use of a dimensional shift is great, but leaves a lot of holes for the story and plot of the other films and how they are related. If you are in anyway a fan of the Cloverfield universe or J.J. Abraham films, I would recommend watching this film. It was a great SciFi story with great camera work and special effects. The space scenes were amazing and the soundtrack made it all the more thrilling!
